There has been a recent unfortunate development-Antiquity’14 has been cancelled due to the college’s Annual Academic Congress, scheduled for the 5th, 6th and 7th of March.
Its sad, especially because we had all worked so hard towards it. But don’t lose hope guys, we are trying our best to make the individual events happen-just not under the aegis of Antiquity. So for all those who had sent their entries- we are going to make the individual events that you had applied for happen- we will intimate you with the details at the earliest. Hope to see you soon!

2. Online event- Essay Competition

Pick a famous historical personality, pull them away from their comfortable surroundings and push them into either a completely different place or a completely different time/era.
For instance, what would have happened if instead of France, Marie Antoinette lived in Brazil? Well, one thing’s for sure-there would have been no cakes to cause problems for her!
What if Mahatma Gandhi had been born in South Africa? Would Mandela and he be friends or foes?
Come up with your own wacky ideas and help us create a completely new brand of history! Conjure up a creative piece-a poem, story, essay, diary entry, anything-in not more than 3000 words and mail them to history.lsr@gmail.com, furnishing the email with necessary details, no later than the 4th of January, 2014, midnight

3. Online event- Photography Competition

Photography since its inception has been an important element in recording and documentation of events, so much so that, it has become a source for historical reconstruction of the 20th and 21st Century. This year at Antiquity we propose to use the Art of Photography for refining our understanding of Popular Cultures through ages.

Themes:

1. “Popular cultures in Streets and Urban Spaces.”

Just a walk through any Indian street would bring forward a tapestry of customs and practices that reflect the numerous popular cultures woven into fabric of our society. Streets and Urban spaces form a micro-cosmos of their own and have provided a distinct space for expression of Public and the Individual. Beliefs and trends are reflected in Street Art and Clothing to predominant Eating practices. And what better way to record the hullabaloo of city spaces than Photography!

2. Traditions and Popular Culture

Traditions and customs have a two way relation with popular cultures; they borrow from each other and are often assimilated into one another. Sometimes traditions also become grounds for contention between High and Popular culture of a given time. For example Marriages in contemporary times follow traditions and conventions but at the same time are influenced by the trends of the present. This follows for Traditional forms of Visual and Performing Arts as well.

The Themes although described are open to interpretation and creative insights and perspectives is what we seek through this competition.
